The medical center
is comprised of a 105 bed comprehensive medical-surgical hospital that
includes a 60-bed geriatric ward and 14-bed psychiatric intensive care
unit. Among outpatient mental health services are a Mental Health Clinic,
Addictive Disorders Treatment Program, Continuing Care Program, Behavioral
Medicine Program, Psychiatric Emergency-Triage Service, Healthcare for
Homeless Veterans Program, a Veteran Outreach Program, and specialized
treatment programs for PTSD. Psychologists at
the medical center are active in all of these service areas.
Because the Sierra Nevada Health Care System is the major training
hospital for the University of Nevada School of Medicine, the psychology
staff maintains a close working relationship with their Department of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Psychologists at the VAMC hold
faculty appointments at the School of Medicine and provide teaching and
consultation services there. The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System
also has affiliations with the Psychology Department, Department of
Social Work, Orvis School of Nursing and Nevada Geriatric Education
Center at University of Nevada in Reno. These affiliations greatly
increase the training experiences available to psychology interns. There
are joint training opportunities for psychology interns, psychiatry
residents, and social work interns across a variety of clinical
rotations and seminars. Psychology interns also have the chance to
provide auxiliary supervision to medical, nursing, social work,
psychology practicum, and geriatric practicum students.
